DFW Courier Service: Red River Rivalry

This year marks the 123rd installment of our DFW Courier Service’s favorite, tongue-twisting faceoff: the Red River Rivalry, also known as Texas-OU weekend, also known as OU-Texas weekend, also known as the Red River Showdown or Shootout. I suppose in over 100 years, there’s been time for every generation to put their own spin on this iconic mashup.

In case you’re new to the south, or maybe you’ve been living under a rock for the last 100+ years, this weekend is when the football teams from the University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma face off for bragging rights (and a golden ten-gallon hat). The weekend always coincides with the State Fair of Texas and is held at the historic Cottonbowl on Fair Park’s property.

Here at Eagle Express, though, we love our history. In fact, our DFW Courier Service has quite a history here in Dallas, as well.  While we don’t have any deep-seeded rivalries (we’ve pretty much always played nice with the other local couriers, though, we are biased in our belief that we’re the #1 courier company in Dallas Fort Worth), we do have history here in the Metroplex. We made our first delivery here over 40 years ago, in 1982. Just a few years back, we upgraded our digs to include a huge warehouse, with room to store our growing customers’ products, all controlled by state of the art technology. We built our business here, grew our families here, and became a staple in the logistics world for many customers who have been with us from the beginning.

Yes, Eagle Express has a rich history in Dallas Fort Worth, just like the Red River Rivalry. We’re delivering some fun facts about Dallas’s favorite showdown, just in time for the big game.

  • The first TX-OU matchup was held in 1900, before Oklahoma gained statehood.

  • For over years, it was called the “Red River Shootout”.

  • It is the third-ranked rivalry, behind Michigan-Ohio State and Army-Navy.

  • Texas won the first game 28-2.

  • Dallas is hallway between Norman and Austin, which is why it was picked for the game.

  • In 1972, Oklahoma blocked a trick play kick thanks to some unauthorized spying on Texas’s practices.

  • The largest margin win was OU with a win of 65-13 in 2003.

  • Nearly every season since 1945, one or both teams have come into the game ranked.

  • In 2008, the game featured two Heisman candidates: Colt McCoy and Sam Bradford.

  • Both Texas and OU will exit the Big 12 conference after this season for the SEC.

  • Last year OU beat Texas 49-0.

  • The current record stands at 65-50-5, in favor of Texas.

Texas-OU kickoff is this Saturday at 11 AM at the historic Cotton Bowl, located in Fair Park. While you’re there, say to to Big Tex at the State Fair of Texas. It’s going on now through October 22nd.

Whether you’re an OU fan or a Texas fan, or just a Cowboys fan, there’s sure to be some exciting football this weekend!
